Ales Krstancic pours Movia: photo post

I snapped this photo of Slovenian winemaker and owner AleÅ¡ Kristančič of Movia when he was in NYC in October. He’s pouring his superb, distinctive 2005 Lunar from the Ribolla Gialla grape (about $45; find this wine), which, as you can see, is cloudy and golden-orange in color. It needs air, which is one reason why he’s pouring it from his custom decanter!

  1. For a moment I thought he was pouring honey into a glass. Tyler, in the fermentation process is this deep color due to the skins or is there something different about the juice of the grape itself?

  2. I would guess he is fermenting in clay vessels…

  3. The lack of filtration and enzymes for clarifying in addition to aging on lees probably enhances its deep color. Great photo!

  4. We just decanted a bottle of Puro when Jeremy Parzen (Bo Bianchi) was here. pretty cool stuff, Maynard…

  5. Disclaimer: I work for DSWE, the importer of Movia. From our website at Domaine Select here is the bassic process: “The only time the grapes for this revolutionary wine are touched by human hands is during the selective manual harvest of the 65-year-old ribolla vines. Ales Kristancic, produced Lunar with the idea of making a wine by imitating the natural method of vinification which occurs in nature through the stages of the moon without the touch of man. To do so, Ales created custom-made barriques in order to replicate the natural process. These barrels made it possible to leave the wine to ferment, age, and stabilize completely on its own without pressing the grapes, without delestage and without adding any chemicals. After 7 months of natural vinification, only the free-flowing wine from the unpressed grapes is bottled without filtration and allowed to refine in the bottle before it is released.” Ales will be in US in May for about two weeks on tour with us and also for the WS Grand Tour. Dinner in SF at Delfina on Friday, Ma 15.
