Wine-place pairings: poolside

Those food-wine pairings get all the glory. But sometimes pairing wine and place is just as important. So if you were poolside in the Hamptons in the picture above, which wine would you pour?

If I were there, I’d pop open some Moscato d’Asti. With aromas of peach, a gentle fizz, sweetness balanced by acidity, I think it’s the ultimate wine for poolside. I’ve had one from Elio Perrone before that would fit the bill nicely (find this wine).

  1. If I was there, I wouldn’t care what I was drinking! haha

Although I do LOVE Moscato d’ Asti so that would do fine!

  2. I think a nice Rose, perhaps from the south of France, would be nice and add some color to the scene. Then maybe something to nosh on…

  3. I would drink rum, or if it was really hot a gin and tonic. If I was to drink wine I think a nice rose or perhaps something very light and nicely salty like a muscadet.

  4. Does it have to be in the Hamptons, or can it be in a less obnoxious, traffic-clogged, bling-tastic poolfront location?

  5. La Raia Gavi 2007
$ 17 well spent crisp and bright almost fizzy sensation very refreshing, certified organic Demeter.

  6. Ha, Mark, yes, could be wherever you find a scenic, relaxing pool.

  7. I’ll second the vote for rosé. Something from Coteaux d’Aix en Provence would be perfect, or perhaps a good Bardolino Chiaretto.

Even better, though, if you can find any, would be Gaillac Perlé, a lightly fizzy, low-ish alcohol, crisp and minerally white from SW France.

  8. The Moscato d’ Asti would be a great choice. Anything light, sweet, low alcohol, and with a little fizz would do the trick. A little white wine sangria would be nice, too.

  9. On a visit to Paso Robles, CA we found a small winery on the west side that has a wine called Poolside Rose. It is a dry Grenache that is perfectly refreshing on a hot day by the pool. I think it was only $12. and was at Thunderbolt Winery.

  10. I agree with Mark, I think a Rose. I would open up Israel’s Tabor Rose for that lucious poolside (could it be the beach in Herzliya? I doubt it but looks the same).

Or perhaps a fizzy sparkler like the new charmat Carmel Brut or a traditional sparkling wine like the brand new Gamla Brut.

  11. It’s been awhile since I weighed in on anything, but this looked interesting. Like many other comments, I feel a good Rose would be appropriate here. How about one from Chile? My choice is the 2006 Montes “Cherub”. A 100% Syrah Rose that has huge strawberry and raspberry flavors with that varietal black pepper edge and a longer than average finish. I would serve it with a nice Baba Ghanouj that I prepared on that $5000 Weber that you can’t see just to the right off the cabana.

South of the Equator wine poolside in the Hamptons? Not stuck up enough for you?

    Too bad!
