I think they should not use the name unless it is produced on the estate, i.e. a Chateau otherwise I could equally put method traditional on a bicycle pump bottle of fizz.It is simply misleading as its not true. Equally you cannot use the name Champagne or even Method Champagnoise unless produced in Champagne. So if that is already the norm why not take a similar line on the term Chateau?

In Europe the labelling tells us a great deal about a wine, and all though most consumers will spot an Amercian Chateau a mile away at a quick glance you must admit it mildly misleading.

If a friend knowing relatively little about wine brought me a bottle proudly assuming he had bought me a French wine as it say's Chateau on the label, he would have been mis sold or one might even say conned.

Perhaps as some one else mentioned an alternative spelling to make the distinction clear?

It is what it is, so to speak. I mean, we always hear about how many issues there are in regard to shipping wine to France, but at the end of the day the market there for American wine is tiny-so it doesn't really matter.

I also think there are a number of other foreign markets that make more sense for a winery, or distributor to try and break into given the difficulty and marketing challenges anyone would face selling American wine in France.
