30 Rock wine: the best tasting note Robert Parker never wrote

Okay, only about five years late on this. But, thanks to site reader Quizicat drawing a parallel to our recent discussion of moscato, I’ve learned that I missed an episode of “30 Rock” where wine featured prominently. Jack Donaghy is delighted to have his name on his own sparkling wine from Long Island and he shares it with Liz Lemon. They toast each other, take a sip–and then both spit it out and retch, with Liz scraping her tongue with her fingers. Jack wonders how he is ever going to sell 10,000 cases of this wine…

When Tracy likes it, Jack has the idea of getting the hip-hop star Ridikulous (played by LL Cool J) to flog the wine in a performance. In the spirit of full disclosure, Jack informs Ridikulous that Robert Parker wrote that “Donaghy Estates tastes like the urine of Satan after a hefty portion of asparagus.”

But how many points?!?

You can see the episode on Netflix streaming or buy it on Amazon or iTunes.

  1. Awesome post … great to laugh that hard in the morning. Thank you!

  2. I will be using that line at our next wine tasting.
And I believe that this would fall into the DNPIM
(Do Not Put In Mouth) category.
Maybe a 59. It gets a few points for appearance and having bubbles. It would probably age for a long time, since no one would drink it.
It kind of reminds me of a bottle of Cab I bought in Tanzania. It looked like wine, and even sort smelled like it. But I guess 1997 was not a good year in Tanzania.

  3. Missed this episode. Love the tasting note. LOL

  4. I was so happy I had scooped this on now-defunct blog when my Canadian TV picked this episode of 30Rock a whole day ahead of its NBC broadcast.
But I wonder why there is no discussion of Cristal and JayZ in the episode description? It’s satirizing that whole Roederer boycott brouhaha which I thought was a key element to the genius that is 30Rock, but then I was probably drinking while watching and blogging… http://weingolb.blogspot.com/2007/02/advance-tv-exclusive-on-last-years.html

  5. Hey Marcus – You go boy! That was the comment somebody should have left you back in 2007. 😉

Yes, the Cristal aspect was mentioned in the show, but it seemed more timely here as Quizicat had mentioned it in relation to moscato, which is getting a bit of a push from some hip-hop performers today (no brands though).

Cool you got a clip! Since then, NBC has even taken it down from Hulu (free).

  6. Awww. Poor Long Island! Ours are the Rodney Dangerfield of wines…
Though now I am going to have to figure out how to work that quote into casual conversation!
    Thanks for the laugh. 🙂

  7. […] • My favorite network sitcom, “30 Rock,” recently had a skewering send-up of a couple of its characters and fermented grape juice.  Stellar blogger Dr. Vino has more. […]

  8. Dr.,

In another recent episode from the current season, you can spot Jenna pouring Gaja in her dressing room.
