Gary’s tweet from today provides some insight as to how the wines are selected for the show:

Does Bordeaux currently have a promotion going on? Certainly the region has had a hard time with younger drinkers, presumably the core of Gary’s audience. But it’s hard to see how his scores of 83 and 87 from the first episode would help them much.

Dan D, well I know what you’re saying but something in my journalistic experience makes my sniffy sniff detector go on alert…maybe he’s not getting paid to rate the wines higher than ever, but just to cover them…that’s a pretty big deal for your first show. I would also wonder why Whole Foods? Why not start your first show in your own place? There are many things to like about Mr. GV, but in a new venture, why do your first show in Whole Foods and about Bordeaux? I smell a deal somewhere. Or product placement at a minimum.

I’ve always enjoyed Gary’s enthusiasm and the way he talks about and reviews wine. He taken the air out of a lot of the pretentious windbags that have dominated wine reviews

My only question for Gary is if he’s being paid for appearances at wineries, retailers or restaurants?

I should add, not that 87 is in any way a poor score. I happily drink plenty of wine that I would score 87, if I scored wines at all.

I think it’s totally suspect that his first post is on a huge promotion from Bordeaux producers going after the Whole Foods market. All the Whole Foods stores have big displays, printed promo booklets from the Bordeaux wine association, etc. – so how consumer and independent is he really?

Bittersweet news. He definitely deserves it. I started watching WLTV about 4 1/2 years ago when I first started to get in to wine. He taught me a lot about more than just wine. Always willing to connect with people. He was actually the first person to post on my Facebook wall back in the day.

To be honest, I don’t watch it near as much as I used to, but I’m sure there are plenty of folks out there that can still learn a lot from him.
