Re the Silicon Valley report, there has been plenty of anecdotal evidence in the last six to nine months that major parts of the wine market were very healthy and that wineries selling expensive wine were succeeding in two ways--first by making very good wine that people wanted to buy, and secondly by discounting at prices that still make money.

When a $150 wine suddenly drops to $99, the winery may not meet its profit goals, but it is certainly not losing money on that wine.

Still, to be sure, all is not rosy. Discount outlets in northern CA have plenty fo $20 selling in giant floor stacks for less than $10. Those wines were probably moved at a loss.

Still, despite the forecasts of massive winery failures, they have yet to materialize in anywhere near the numbers forecast. If the rising market tide does lift all boats, most folks will survive. They have weathered the storm so far. This next year will tell the tale. There are even reports that Syrah is selling again.
