I find the link between Rudolf Stiener and growing grapes and making wine very interesting. I like the comment about the return to the 1200's with regard to farming. However I can't help but recall the OP-Ed page from December 2007 about box wine. I wondered if we would ever see a Clos de la Coulee Serrant in a box? Would that be taking biodyamics to the next level.

I look at Biodynamics as the way wine likely was before serious and modern chemistry took hold. Back in the 1200's or so, there was no real way to make your wine stand out from neighbors other than to experiment with how you treated your soil and how you handled your vines, in the hopes that the attention would create new facets within your wine.

Pretty much once the fruit was picked and pressed - your wine was going to be how it was going to be and there was nothing else you could do to influence it post-harvest.

Rediscovering the old tricks and vineyard practices of previous centuries is the essence of biodynamie.

Joly attaches "new age" kind of philosophies to the process which in turn then makes biodynamie seem silly, but at the end of the day - there are tried and true techniques available to us that have been employed by generations of farmers that came before us and who had no other option but use these tools to make good wines and vineyards.

I like seeing wine return to a natural state ---- no chemistry sets, just expression of its location.

I have a feeling there was a lot of shouting and passion during this presentation. Then again, maybe that's just all the exclamation points. I like how he put it, that he is looking to express the truth of the wine. He feels that we all were involved in biodynamics long ago and wines were true back then, but, with the advent of new technologies, that truth has been lost. Of course, that is until the technology of the internet, which he rightly points out can be a forum for anyone's voice. On our vineyard at Tin Cross, the team strongly believes in organic winemaking (especially the sustainable benefits) and makes it a point to capture the same values presented by the pioneers who first planted on our mountain.
