Excellent piece. I for one smelled money in Champagne when I visited this summer. It will be interesting to see if they expand the appellation.

Agree with Jack.

I think UK is the largest export market for Champagne and here it is constantly on offer -- I bought a case of Lanson Black Label half price at £11.99 (=$24) a couple of weeks ago and Woolworths is selling a Champagne at £5 (=$10). (all taxes included)

There's no shortage... I guess the Champenoise are hoping to encourage us to stock up.

<I>"... that small growers are stockpiling up to 100 million bottles"</i>

So, how much do the non-small growers have stockpiled? (I can't help but think, "100 billion bottles" but...)

So what if the big guys can't get as many grapes as they'd like? Should we feel sorry for them? Won't they find other ways to get grapes - such as taking over some of the small growers?

In general, isn't this whole "Champagne" shortage about the most ridiculous marketing ploy yet? Remember the "2000 Champagne shortage" they promoted back in 1999? Oh, there wasn't an actual shortage...there was never even a possibility, right? So, again, here, if small growers have 100 million bottles stockpiled, add in the REST, how will there EVER, EVER be a shortage? (And a real shortage would simply cause prices to go up - how do they not win there?)

Nice interview, and I wholehearted agree with his suggestion of Vilmart - my favorite Champagne producer. :)
