In 1991, my wife and I honeymooned in Paris and Bordeaux. Marcel Ducasse was a charming, gracious host. We tasted the first and second wines that were in cask and tasted the 1982 and the 1985. When we balked at his offer to open bottles from earlier vintages because we didn't want the wine to go to waste, M. Ducasse insisted, saying the wine would be served to the workers at dinner.

I have retained a fondness for the wines of Chateau Lagrange ever since.

Best wishes to M. Ducasse.

Rick and Dave,

I'm so glad to hear that you both had great experiences there. I've met Marcel once before this. Both times I have found him to be an eloquent statesman for Bordeaux. And his wines are excellent too! I hope the people of Arcachon enjoy him in his retirement!

Thanks for the inside scoop! I too was blown away by his hospitality when we meet him in 2005. I also agree that the 2002 is one of my all time favorite Lagrange vintages.

I had the good fortune and great pleasure to meet Marcel at Lagrange last spring. We arrived at 4PM and didn't leave til nearly 7. We (wife and I) were there with only our driver and Mdme Ducasse. Marcel opened 9 bottles! What a charming gentleman! We sent him Holiday greetings and he promptly responded with a card and note. A real class act.

Tyler--
You'd be the envy of those oldtime green-visor, cigarette in the corner of the mouth journalists who prided themselves in getting out the story fast and incisively. I was there (briefly) and you got it down right.
