i travelled around europe this past summer and found pretty much no beer but an abundance of cheap wine in every country i visited, but no matter where i went, nothing compared to the vihno verde in portugal. i'm not a big wine drinker but i absolutely loved it- it was a nice substitute for the air conditioning i never managed to find. now that i'm back in the states though i'm unfortunately having a heck of a time trying to track down a store in the area that carries it

I'm embarrassed to say I laughed at the first person to ever recommend vinho verde to me. Years later, at a ridiculously low price we picked up a bottle and discovered the ideal wine for a hot summer day. "Boat wine" is a good term, but we don't have a boat. We did have a roof garden or "Tar Beach" here in NYC and vinho verde was the ideal summer "roof wine."

Winesmith,
I like that--"boat wine." It's a great idea for the vinho verde marketing board...
Cheers,

I tried my first vinho verde this summer, and I became a fan, too. If it were a beer, it'd be what I call "boat beer." Something I'd happily drink in the sun as a refreshment. Not necessarily what I'd grab if I was craving a good glass of wine, though.

And you're right. It is kind of a curiousity. But it's inexpensive and refreshing...so no need to question too much.
