Wine Century update

I’ve gotta knock this thing off….As I posted previously, I have had 92 different grape varieties in my quest for a Wine Century. So vinho verde called me like a siren yesterday.

Who knew that it had so many grape varieties? (Or for that matter that Portuguese pronounce the term something like “vinge verte.”) While I’d had alvarinho before from north of the border in Spain, I can add these grape varieties to the list:

Arinto (or Pedernal)
Avesso
Azal
Loureiro
Trajadura

I had a red too (who knew there was vinho verde red?) and that included the grape alvarelhao.

So that makes 98! I’m on a hunt to find two more….

  1. I know exactly what you’re going through…..I became a member last year, and what I did was take the list and start searching online for the wines I hadn’t had yet. Astor Wines (NYC) served as a good source, and I would order a case of different varietals until I reached my 100 mark. Funny thing is, now I’m inclined to finish the ENTIRE list of varietals, little by little. Enjoy the ride!

  2. Exctly! Almost there!

  3. That’s kind of a fun little club. I’ll have to look through their list later, though I have this feeling that having spent five years specializing in wines of Italy that I went past it a long time ago… we shall see!
