Dr. Vino, Tres Picos is regretably also selling for $14 at my neighborhood wine shop in Uptown (Minneapolis), so I was stunned to see that it's retailing for as low as $10 in some places. This shop is usually pretty good on price, better than the prestige retailer in the city, Surdyk's.

Terry -
I got it in October (?) at Astor Wines when they had a one day sale on Spanish wines. So my price was actually $9.40 or something. But I clicked on the wine-searcher link and found it currently available in NYC for as low as $9 from a store with free delivery (with minimum order) so it pays to shop around!
Cheers,
Tyler

Jens -
Interesting. Certainly there are PLENTY of NY retailers who work on a full 50% markup (or even more sometimes!!) but fortunately there are some who mark-up less...Maybe you should be the Cincinnati Wine Closeout Center and undercut all your competitors?
Cheers,
-Tyler

Where did you get this delicious wine for 9.99? I bought some at Union Square Wines for considerably more--like Jens' price.

The difference is that the distributor HAS to mark it up 33%, and the retailer HAS to mark it up 50%. We can't discount it back down unless we close it out.

jens cincinnati wine discount (NOT)

Hey Jens -

What do you think accounts for that price spread? Jorge Ordonez probably sells a case to distributors in Ohio and NY for the same price--does the retailer in Ohio mark up more? The distributor? Or both?

Have fun at the Cinci Bengal Bodega

I have not tatsted the 2004 but have enjoyed the 2003. In Ohio it is $14 so it is not as compelling as a "great" value but very good. As to Grenache versus Tempranillo, I give Tempranillo a nod but I like big bad wines.

jens at cincinnati bodega de vino
